Issues flagged with the theme of road safety awareness week
Crispin Moger, CEO at leading provider of cars and insurance Marmalade, flags the issues with the theme of this year’s Road Safety Awareness Week. He calls for the focus to be on helpful and practical solutions that are actually going to help save the lives of people on our roads, rather than well-meaning but unrealistic flights of fancy.
“Road Safety Week is a great initiative and one that we support wholeheartedly. As a business we have helped to improve the safety of thousands of young people on the road. On a national basis, 1 in 5 young drivers is involved in an accident within the first six months of passing their test, with Marmalade’s customers this number falls to 1 in 20. And we continue to work on enhancing our service and product range in order to further reduce this number which, we believe, is still too high.
“However, the theme for this November’s Road Safety Awareness Week is ‘drive less, live more’, and I just can’t see how this is going to help driver safety. In an ideal world it might be that no one would drive. However, this just isn’t going to happen overnight – or in the foreseeable future – so surely we need to spend this week focusing on practical solutions for people on the road, particularly the young drivers who have such scary statistics hanging over them.
“For young people today, who need to get to work, college or to see people, public transport, walking and cycling aren’t always going to be feasible options. How many people do you know that can walk to work?
“We want young people to be able to drive and make the most of life, whether that’s work or play – preferably both – but they do need guidance until they build up that all-important experience. That’s why we use advanced telematics and one-to-one support provided via a dedicated customer support team - and it is delivering great results.
“We want Road Awareness Week to improve safety by providing young people and their parents with practical advice and support. As such, we encourage anyone concerned about the safety – or cost – of getting young drivers on the road to call us during this week to find out more. Offering such a good safety record enables us to drive down costs. Our telematics policies offer up to 50% savings on non-telematics cover – and we start with low policies and work to keep them that way.”
